Cellulose browning is a brown discoloration to the carpet. It normally appears after a carpet cleaning or after the carpet has been flooded or otherwise damaged by water. What happens is that there is a chemical reaction at the backing of the carpet. The carpet fibers then cause the discoloration to rise to the surface due to capillary action. This problem is much more common in older carpets where a jute backing is used but can affect modern carpet under the right conditions. It is however still very rare to see this type of problem on newer latex backed carpets. The treatment for this problem involves the application of an acid based cleaning agent to help neutralize the PH of the carpet and remove the browning. Because it requires special chemicals and techniques treatment of this problem is best left to professional carpet cleaners. They have the tools and skills to handle this type of job.
